Colors of Our Family

Pact, An Adoption Alliance, is excited to introduce a six-session LGBTQ parent support group designed to discuss issues and strategies relevant to race, ethnicity, culture, adoption and parenting.

This new group series as part of an ongoing partnership between three great Bay Area non-profits:

  • Our Family Coalition - supporting and advocacy for LGBTQ parents,
  • iPride & Fusion - supporting multiracial families and individuals,
  • and Pact, An Adoption Alliance - supporting families who have (or plan to) adopt children of color.

Each group session will offer LGBTQ parents an opportuntity to explore their feelings about transracial adoptive parenting in a safe and nurturing setting, with a focus on developmentally appropriate approaches to their family's issues.

When:
May 3rd, 17th, 31st, June 14th, 28th and July 12th
Saturdays, 2-4 pm
The group will meet 6 times, once every other week.

Who:
The Spring 2008 group is for LGBTQ parents of transracilly adopted children between the ages of 0 to 5. (Families with older children, please let us know of your interest as we hope to offer future groups for other age ranges.)

Cost:
The cost for 6 sessions is a suggested sliding scale of $90-$120.
($15-$20 per session)
No one turned away for lack of funds.
Free Children's Programming with Childcare at the LGBT Center's KidSpace.

  • Whiteness and self-analysis
  • Race, history, adoption and cultural awareness
  • International adoption issues
  • Domestic adoption issues
  • Mixed race identity
  • Racial/ethnic identity development
  • Parenting strategies
  • Working with schools and other outsiders
  • Being a visible family
  • Making connections with your child's ethnic or racial community

Facilitators
All groups will be co-led by two peer facilitators, one LGBTQ transracial adoptive parent and one transracially-adopted adult.

Family Explorations! California Families

The Oakland Museum of California (located at 1000 Oak @ 10th Street) hosts a day of fun for ALL California families—with a special welcome to those with adopted, foster, mixed-race, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender members—on Sunday, May 11, 12:30–4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The Family Explorations! California Families event offers something for everyone:

  • Performance by the Oakland East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus Otto Voci ensemble
  • Magician Timothy James
  • Martial arts demonstration by Destiny Arts
  • Gold panning
  • Story time with the Oakland Public Library
  • Games with COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) and Oakland Parks & Recreation
  • Screening of the film My People Are….
  • Hands-on art projects with our friends from MOCHA and artist Josie Iselin.

The California Families program is produced in partnership with Our Family Coalition, Family Builders by Adoption, the City of Oakland, and I-Pride, and with support from the museum’s new LGBT Task Force.

The partner organizations and other local community groups will staff tables with information on family-related services and programs. Browse the tables, visit current exhibitions, shop at the museum store, or relax in the lush museum gardens. Have a great family day!

Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival 2008

Mixed Chicks Chat is excited to announce the first annual Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival (TM) will take place this June 12th through the 15th at the state-of-the-art Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, CA.

The Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival will be an annual event celebrating films and literary works exploring racially and culturally Mixed heritages.

The Festival is inclusive: anyone who identifies as Mixed, has a trans-racial or trans-cultural adoptive family, or who supports interracial and intercultural relationships is welcome.
