Loving Day 2007
The Loving Decision Conference was held June 21-24, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois. This national conference brought together a diversity of people within the multiethnic, multiracial, and transracially adopted community of individuals, families, relationships, organizations, educators, businesses, allies and beyond. A much needed dialogue was welcomed as we enter the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court decision which ended the legal ban on interracial marriage in the United States. This historical case not only raised issues about intermarriage between "whites" and people of color in this country, but it also grappled with the complexities around "race" that are still being confronted by this diverse population today. Furthermore, as the issue of legalized marriage is still being prohibited in the 21st century upon other communities, what questions might we still need to address in the U.S. and elsewhere? Is there such thing as a "multiracial" community, and if so, who makes up this community? This conference was a monumental event that sought to educate, entertain, and bridge connections between all key players and communities in society toward bettering relations in the 21st century.
